Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatments using the mineral fluoride have long been recognized for the protection they provide against tooth decay. By strengthening the outer enamel layer, fluoride provides a natural, effective way of keeping teeth shielded from harmful elements and bacteria. Much of today’s tap water and many dental products contain controlled amounted of fluoride. However, depending on your personal situation and response to common fluoride exposure, you may not be receiving maximum benefit.

Determining the correct amount of Fluoride for you.

At Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry, we can assess your current state of decay resistance to determine if and how much of a supplemental fluoride treatment could benefit you. While very safe and effective under normal exposure amounts, fluoride in excess doses can lead to fluoride toxicity and dental fluorosis (a speckling or staining of the teeth). As a licensed health professional, Dr. Peter Nelson can prescribe a fluoride treatment therapy that is both safe and beneficial for you. Fluoride treatment options from Advanced Cosmetic Dental include:

Systemic Fluoride Therapy

Systemic fluoride therapy references when fluoride is ingested orally and delivered to the tooth surface via the bloodstream. While systemic fluoride benefits can be derived from food sources, water sources, or dietary supplements, a supplemental fluoride therapy in the form of pills, lozenges, or drops may also be prescribed.

Topical Fluoride Therapy

Topical fluoride therapy involves applying fluoride toothpaste, a concentrated gel, or fluoride rinse directly to the tooth structure to delay or slow down the tooth decay process. Certain precautions should be taken—especially with young children—when administering this type of therapy.
